For decades, AI has been evolving, and it is now actively assisting people and organizations to do the inconceivable. One of the most challenging leaps ahead in computing has been to give robots the ability to think and evaluate. Businesses have removed most of their repetitive tasks due to this adoption of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, allowing them to focus on addressing unique and crucial challenges. Machine Learning is one of the sub-domains of AI, a broad word that encompasses a wide range of sub-domains. AI has brought a drastic change in everyone's lifestyle with the trending technologies.

About a year ago, a few of us began working on an open source machine learning platform, Cortex. Our motivation was simple: Building an application out of a model was a terrible experience full of glue code and boilerplate, and we wanted a tool that abstracted it all away. While we're very proud of our work on Cortex, we are just one piece of a trend we've seen accelerate over the last year, and that is the growth of the machine learning engineering ecosystem. Companies are hiring MLEs faster than ever, and the projects being released are getting better and better. While this is very exciting to us, we still frequently hear the question "What is machine learning engineering?"

In late 2018, Google made the decision to prevent its "Smart Compose"--a feature that predicts what users intend to write in emails and auto-completes sentences--from suggesting gender-based pronouns such as "him," "her," and "their." Why? Google feared that the tool was biased and would be prone to suggesting incorrect gender-based pronouns. The change was prompted by a Google research scientist who typed "I am meeting an investor next week" and witnessed Smart Compose suggest the following follow-up question: "Do you want to meet him?" The investor in question was female.

The collection of web-based software that Google offers to businesses and consumers is officially known as G Suite. Most people are familiar with Gmail and Google Docs, but quite a few do not realize that they offer a whole range of productivity and collaboration tools via your computer or mobile device. Google is launching a number of updates to its G Suite tools today that, among other things, brings to Google Docs an AI grammar checker, smarter spellchecking and, soon, spelling autocorrect. The company is also launching the ability for G Suite users to use the Google Assistant to read out a calendar schedule and, maybe even more importantly, create, cancel and reschedule events. Google is also adding new accessibility features to the Assistant for use during meetings. In addition, Google yesterday announced that Smart Compose would soon come to G Suite, too. It's maybe no surprise that Google is adding its new grammar suggestions to Docs.

Machines are getting better at writing. They can finish our sentences. They can reply to our emails. They can write news reports and even novels. But just because they can doesn't mean they should.

A writer for The New Yorker muses on the impact of writing generated by artificial intelligence -- and how surprisingly powerful it can be. Specifically, he takes a look at Google Smart Compose and similar predictive text tools driven by AI. His experience with Smart Compose -- which auto-completes sentences you write when using Google email -- was particularly eye-opening. "Perhaps because writing is my vocation, I am inclined to consider my sentences, even in a humble email, in some way a personal expression of my original thought," author John Seabrook observes about his experience with Smart Compose. "It was therefore disconcerting how frequently the AI was able to accurately predict my intentions, often when I was in mid-sentence, or even earlier. "Sometimes, the machine seemed to have a better idea than I did." Bottom line: This article in The New Yorker is an extremely in-depth, high quality read. "Some of the main issues, I think, relate to uncertainty around the accuracy of evidence produced by AI systems, as well as the labeling of automation to ensure that end–users are aware of its use," says Nick Diakopoulos. Diakopoulos is an assistant professor in communication studies and computer science at Northwestern University. "Another issue is the quality of data that is fed into AI systems," Diakopoulos adds. "It's well understood that if biased data is fed into a machine learning system, the system will learn those biases.
